Driving
Batu Caves is about 13 Kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur.
However, you don't have to come to Batu Caves via Kuala Lumpur, especially if you're coming from the North (Perak, Kedah etc) or East (Pahang, Terengganu etc).
There are highways connecting to Batu Caves, bypassing the Kuala Lumpur city centre.

By Train
But if you're in Kuala Lumpur the best way to reach it is by train. From KL Sentral.
If KL Sentral is convenient to you, catch the KTM Komuter to Batu Caves.
The train drops you just outside the Temple Complex.
Batu Caves is 8 stations away from KL Sentral and 7 stations away from the Kuala Lunpur Railway station.
Use this train route as a guide:
You can either board the train at KL Sentral of the Kuala Lumpur Railway station which is closer to attractions in the heart of the city (Petaling Street, Cengtral Market etc).
It's a two-ringgit fare, one way. But if you'll be returning to KL Sentral after your Batu Caves visit, it would be advisable to get a return ticket, so that you don't have to queue up at the Batu Caves station for your return trip.
