In Sanskrit, abhishegam or abisshek means sprinkiling or wetting.
Abhishegam is form of offering or service to a deity.
The five most important items used in an abhishegam are:
- Milk which represents Water and is associated with taste
- Yoghurt which represents Earth and is associated with touch
- Ghee which represents Fire and is associated with sight
- Honey which represents Ether and is linked to hearing
- Sugar which represents Air and is associated with smell.
You would have noticed that the 5 items has a connection with the 5 Elements and also with the 5 senses.
When the five items are combined, they become the panchamritam or the five nectars.
When each item is showered upon the deity, vibrations are emitted.
This has a positive effect on the surrounding environment and also those who witness the abishegam. A sense of upliftment could be felt if one witnesses the abishegam with full concentration.
Anyone is allowed to witness the abishegam in Batu Caves, After the abishegam the curtain is drawn and the deity is dressed and decorated.
