Thaipusam was first celebrated in Batu Caves in 1892. Since then it has been a mainstay during every Thai month or Thai Masam. The auspicious Thai month (Thai Masam) is the 10th month in the Tamil Calendar.
On this day, Lord Muruga devotees carry kavadis during Thaipusam.
On the first day of Thai Masam, Tamils around the world celebrate Thai Pongal or the Tamil New Year.
Thai masam is a month devoted for Lord Muruga and his father Lord Shiva. On this month Thaipusam is celebrated for Lord Muruga and Maha Shivaratri is celebrated for Lord Shiva.
In those days devotees had to climb wooden steps up the hill to temple.
The wooden steps were then replaced by 272 stone steps which takes one about 400 feet above ground level.
Thaipusam attracts over a million devotees and tourists who arrive to pray and witness Thaipusam celebrated on a grand scale over a period of 3 days.
